WHY WE'RE DOING THIS
This project isn't a side note. It's our vision at work.
DAWN stands for the belief in a better tomorrow — and for taking the future into our own hands. We never wanted to conquer the market. We want to be a lighthouse for the fashion industry: proof that a company can operate responsibly, sustainably, and ethically while making jeans that fit better and fit our times better.
Our mission is to prove that this business model works: people, planet, and profit in balance. Everyone along our supply chain is a stakeholder to us. We in Berlin are privileged, and we're aware of that. That's why we fight for a fair supply chain that gives people a better life from Tier 1 to Tier 5 — from our own factory in Saigon to the farmers who grow the cotton for our jeans.
This is exactly where this project comes in. With our own manufacturing in Vietnam and our close relationship with our spinning and weaving partner, our visibility already reaches deeper into the chain today than most brands our size. The next, logical step leads back to the origin: to the field — to where cotton grows, where livelihoods are created, and where regeneration begins. Not as a marketing claim, but as a working model.
And because cotton isn't an issue any one brand can or should solve alone, we're not taking this step alone. "If you want to change the world, go out there and get caught trying" — we live by that line. This series is exactly that: we're letting people watch us try. In real time, with all the detours included.
OUR PARTNER
Who is Cotton Diaries?
"Changing the way fashion is farmed – one story, one project, one person at a time." That's how Cotton Diaries describes what the organization stands for: changing the way fashion is grown, story by story, project by project, person by person.
Cotton Diaries is a global community of people passionately dedicated to cotton, with the goal of making cotton systems more resilient and more just. They support everyone who works with cotton — from fashion and textile companies to NGOs to farmers — in researching, implementing, and communicating solutions to cotton's most pressing social and environmental problems.
This happens on three levels: Cotton Diaries makes visible the people and projects making cotton better around the world — from agroforestry initiatives in northeastern Brazil, to organic pioneers in India, to the organic and fair-trade cotton coalition in West Africa. They maintain a network of cotton experts who share their knowledge and make progress possible. And they support brands and suppliers who want to go beyond certification and tackle problems directly at the source.
What convinced us about Cotton Diaries is the attitude behind it: certification is only a starting point, not a destination. Traceability all the way to the farm is the key. Solutions have to be specific, because every supply chain is different. And impact requires intention — sustainability belongs in the strategy, not in a drawer. That's exactly the mindset we want to work with at DAWN: not buying a better label, but building a better system.
Behind this series, on the Cotton Diaries side, are Ani and Anna — together with them, we're documenting what's really happening along the way.
